Coca-Cola consumers simply adore this drink and even believe the myth that it is completely ok to consume it daily as long as you burn off the calories.
Moreover, customers financially support organizations, businesses when buying these drinks, and believe they benefit from their consumption.
Moreover, they support the “energy balance” myth that the sugar consumption is all right if you burn off the calories through exercise. Yet, the biggest problem concerning this drink is its potential side- effects, like a chronic disease.
Yet, this myth is being sustained, mostly due to the following campaigns, listed in the recent article, The Four Hallmarks of Big Soda (BS) Nutritional Propaganda by Russ Greene and Russell Burger from Crossfit.com:
-The International Food Information Council Foundation, funded by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo. Which claim that ” when it comes to weight management or weight loss, it’s the total calories that matter most.”
-The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which are also funded from Coca-Cola via the CDC Foundation, and promote an “energy balance,” as: “Healthy eating is all about balance. You can enjoy your favorite foods even if they are high in calories, fat or added sugars. The key is eating them only once in a while.”
— “The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), funded by Coca-Cola until 2015, also founded the “Energy Balance 4 Kids With Play” program with the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF), and they maintain that “this organization represents Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestle, General Mills and other distributors of sugary-sweet products.”
-The National Institutes of Health “We Can!” Campaign, which advises the consumption of soda only “once in a while” and maintaining balance by more physical activity on days when children consume lots of high-sugar foods/drinks.
-The American College of Sports Medicine, funded by Coca-Cola, which maintains that while water should be your first choice of beverage, “there is no harm in drinking juice or even soda in moderation.”
However, we maintain that the issue is not the number of calories, but the negative consequences of soda. Therefore, we give you 22 reasons not to drink Coca-Cola or any other soda drink.
Euromonitor claims that the average American consumes over 126 grams of sugar daily, which equals 25.2 teaspoons, or the equivalent of three 12 ounce colas.
Studies have confirmed the adverse effects of soda on the teeth and waistline. Yet, there are even more serious consequences, like obesity, asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and COPD.
Let’s review the risks of the consumption of soda:
1.Soda increases diabetes risk.
Increased sugar levels cause a lot of stress on the pancreas, potentially damaging its ability to keep up with the body’s need for insulin. The consumption of 1-2 sugary drinks daily raises the risk for type 2 diabetes by 25%.
2. Soda contains artificial sweeteners.
Artificial sugars are related to multiple illnesses and diseases including cancer.
3. Caffeine in soda blocks the absorption of magnesium.
Carolyn Dean, M.D., N.D. claims that magnesium is essential for over 325 enzyme reactions in the body, supports the detoxification of the body, and is needed to reduce the damage from environmental chemicals, heavy metals, and other toxins.
4. Soda causes Asthma.
One South Australian study involved 16,907 participants aged 16 years and older, and researchers found that increased levels of soda consumption were linked to asthma and COPD.
5. Caramel coloring in soda leads to cancer.
The caramel coloring in colas is produced in a chemical process, and it is not made from caramelized sugar. In fact, it is a result of the reaction of sugars with ammonia and sulfites under high pressure and temperatures.
These chemical reactions cause the formation of 2-methylimidazole (2-MI) and 4 methylimidazoles (4-MI), which have been shown in government-conducted studies to lead to liver, lung, or thyroid cancer or leukemia in laboratory mice and rats.
6.Soda is high in calories.
Coca Cola is devoid of nutrients but extremely rich in sugar. Namely, a 20 ounce can of Coca Cola contains 17 teaspoons of sugar and 240 calories.
7. Soda raises the obesity risk in children. Each additional soda drink raises the risk of obesity by about 60%.

Numerous citrus-based sodas and sports drink contain brominated vegetable oil (BVO) to prevent their separating. Yet, it has been patented by chemical companies as a flame retardant and is banned in over 100 countries.

Each soda consumed daily raises the risk of heart disease by 20% in men.
11. Soda is extremely high sugar.
The average 20-ounce Coca-Cola can contains 17 teaspoons of sugar, which seriously damage health.
12. Soda depletes the mineral levels.
Researchers at Tufts University conducted a study which involved thousands of men and women and showed that women who drank 3 or more cola-based sodas daily, had almost 4% lower bone mineral density in their hips, although their calcium and vitamin D levels were controlled.
13. Soda changes your metabolism.
The findings of Dr. Hans-Peter Kubis, the director of the Health Exercise and Rehabilitation group at Bangor University in England, showed that the regular consumption of soda can actually change the metabolism in the human body.
His study involved participants who drank 140 grams of sugar daily for a month and their metabolism was changed, as they could not burn fat and lose weight easily.
14. Soda reduces the kidney function.
A study which lasted for 11 years, conducted at the Harvard Medical School, and involved 3,318 women, showed that diet cola is related to a two-fold increased risk for kidney decline.
15. Caramel coloring in soda causes vascular issues.
Dr. Nehal N. Mehta, director of Inflammatory Risk Cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania, claims that there is a relationship between vascular problems and caramel-containing products.
16. The consumption of more than one soda daily raises the risk for heart disease and metabolic syndrome.
Ravi Dhingra, M.D., lead author of the study and an instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School claims that “If you are drinking one or more soft drinks a day, you may be increasing your risk of developing metabolic risk factors for heart disease.”
Research has confirmed that people who are consuming one or more sodas a day had a 48 % increased risk of metabolic syndrome in comparison to those consuming less than one soft drink daily.
17. The acid in soda wears away dental enamel.
Laboratory testing on the acidity of these drinks indicates that the amount of acid in soda wears away dental enamel.
18. Sodas containing ascorbic acid and potassium benzoate can form benzene, which is a popular carcinogen.
The FDA claims that when benzoate is exposed to light and heat in the presence of vitamin C, it can be turned into benzene, which is considered to be a carcinogen by the American Cancer Society.
19. Daily sodas and other sugar-sweetened drinks lead to Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD).
One study involved 2,634 individuals who completed a CT scan in estimating the amount of fat in the liver.
Researchers found a higher prevalence of NAFLD among people who consumed more than one sugar-sweetened drink daily compared to people who didn’t consume sugar-sweetened beverages.
20. Soda dehydrates the body.
Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning that it supports the urine production. Hence, in the case the body’s cells are dehydrated, they cannot absorb nutrients easily, and cannot eliminate waste with ease as well.
21. Diet sodas contain mold inhibitors.
Diet sodas contain mold inhibitors which are labeled as sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate. Peter Piper, a professor of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the University of Sheffield in the U.K., for an interview for a British newspaper, claims that:
“These chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it – they knock it out altogether.”
This preservative has been related to hives, asthma, and other allergic conditions. Some companies have substituted sodium benzoate with potassium benzoate, including Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi.
Yet, both of them have been classified as irritants to the eyes, mucous membranes, and skin by the Food Commission in the UK.
22. Diet soda does not help the weight loss process.
Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center discovered that the more diet sodas a person drank, the higher their risk of becoming overweight.
The consumption of 2 or more cans daily increased waistlines by 500% greater than those who did not drink soft drinks.
